PERSONALITY
Castiel is a consummate angel. While many others have become corrupt, Castiel believes in the platonic ideal of the angel as a force for the greater good. He considers humans to be works of art. Though it takes him time to come around, he's willing to sacrifice everything when Dean asks, betraying his own kind at great pain to himself, and giving his life so Dean can attempt to save the world. His sense of self is predicated on conforming to this platonic ideal, and he holds himself to incredibly high standards as a result. His greatest fear is to fail to live up to these standards. When he doesn't, he punishes himself.
His behavior reflects his angelic nature just as much as his actions — he is self-righteous, self-serious, self-flagellating, and incredibly practical. His mannerisms can appear inhuman or even at times animalistic.
Angels are considered emotionless, though Castiel experiences feeling despite himself. He is warned by his former commander, Anna, "It gets worse."
He believes the ends justify the means. Before he's convinced by Dean, he stresses the idea of paradise for all humanity — as he feels it would be a release from the suffering he sees on earth. It's only his connection to Dean, and Dean's own passion, which persuades him to deviate from the predestined path.
Although Castiel is cold, he is capable of warming up to individuals. Others often liken him to the Winchesters' pet or attack dog, which isn't an entirely unsuitable description. He is "tamed", in a manner. Particularly by Dean's humanizing influence.
Castiel is self-sacrificing almost as a rule.
He is a self-destructive person, and not only in this sense. His first reaction to learning God has abandoned him is to turn to alcohol abuse. (Additionally, an alternate timeline version of Castiel, which Castiel is aware of, becomes substance dependent.)
Unsurprisingly, Castiel has low self-esteem. He does not view himself as someone with intrinsic value. If he has no use to those around him, he is worthless in his own eyes. He must always uphold the platonic ideal of the angel.
Because this belief is predicated on what he is, he can easily apply these standards to himself and not to others without seeing the hypocrisy.
Living amongst humans is an entirely new experience for Castiel.
He is awkward, sarcastic, blunt, and rude, both purposefully and accidentally, as he has a tendency to misread social cues and expressions. He maintains a distance from humanity despite his regard for life, choosing to hold himself separate. Personal conflict makes him uncomfortable. He is sensitive, takes things personally, and his feelings are easily hurt. He can be dramatic and childish.
He has a great deal of unprocessed trauma. He experiences persistent occurrences of heavy violence, physical and psychological abuse, and has even been tortured and killed by his superiors. The violations of his bodily and personal autonomy that have occurred repeatedly over the course of his long life are an intrinsic part of him, and have led to a weakening and sometimes even complete collapse of his self-ownership.
His trauma presents in a number of ways: As depression, anxiety, inferiority complex, and fits of violent rage. Castiel does not know how to process his pain in a healthy way. From his point of view, his duty supersedes all else. Likewise, he takes penance for any and all perceived sins incredibly seriously.
God being the current main source of his pain further complicates the situation. Despite feeling a deep sense of betrayal, perhaps even to the point of hatred, he still loves God, and longs for God's affection.
It's an unsustainable position, but by successfully putting himself to good use, perhaps he will find a solution.

HISTORY
• He was created by God sometime around 4,540 mya, roughly 4.54 billion years ago. He was physically present on earth when the first life was leaving the oceans. He remained in Heaven watching over the earth until the birth of modern humanity, at which point Lucifer rebelled against God. War was waged in Heaven, but Lucifer was cast down to Hell by God. After this, God disappeared from Heaven and the archangels took over. 2000 years ago, all angels returned to Heaven to await the apocalypse as was prophesied in the Book of Revelation.
• Castiel's commander was the angel Anna. Anna purposefully tore her grace out and fell to earth about 18-20 years ago, and Castiel was promoted to commander of her garrison.
• Castiel was tasked with raising Dean Winchester from Hell and aiding him in his tasks from Heaven.
• Because his superiors felt he was getting too close to those in his charge, he was demoted.
• Castiel was cut off from Heaven and became a fallen angel. This was because he rebelled against orders at Dean Winchester's request.

PHYSIOLOGY & BEHAVIOR
• Castiel is possessing the body of Jimmy Novak. Jimmy's body is 5'11" and average weight. Jimmy Novak is dead. His blood type is [?]
• Castiel is an angel of the Judeo-Christian faith. He is presumably one of the malakim.
• Castiel's true form is about 300 meters in height and can be described as a "wavelength of celestial intent".
• Angels from Castiel's world are superhuman creatures with supernatural powers (detailed below). They are immortal and are not naturally capable of human emotion, though it's possible for them to develop the capacity. They tend to require order and direction from a superior, as they do not naturally possess free will. Castiel is an exception to the rule, but still becomes lost without some amount of guidance.
• Angels in their natural state are an incorporeal and telepathic species, and require a vessel to interact with mortal species. They communicate with each other both directly and over a long-distance telepathic network which they are always connected to. They do not reproduce or have genitals, nor do they inherently have any concept of gender or sexuality.
• Their forms vary, though at least one describes themselves as having six wings and four faces, one of which is a lion. They exude a heavenly white light. Their voice to the human ear is a shrill, almost mechanical drone.

• In their natural state, they are harmful to see or hear. The sight of an angel will burn up the eyes of any who witness them. The sound of an angel's voice causes rupture of the ear drums and further damage the longer the exposure. The damaged caused by either can be fatal. Other celestial beings are immune to this effect, as are some rare special humans.
• Their society, such as it is, seems to be military in structure. Lower angels are grouped into garrisons with commanders. These commanders answer to superiors who answer directly to the Archangels, who are the most powerful.
• Superiors are unforgiving and dehumanizing toward their subordinates. Those who grow too close to their human charges are punished with demotion. Persisting is responded to with torture and "realignment". Direct disobedience is punishable by death.
• They otherwise have no cultural customs aside from worship of God, their Father.
• Castiel's powers are as follows. Due to his disconnect from Heaven, he's currently incapable of: smiting, healing, and resurrecting the dead. His ability to travel through time has been contained. There may be other minor side-effects. Eventually, his grace will run dry, rendering him mortal, but it's unclear how much energy he will have to expend to cause this to happen.
