Castiel is an Angel of the Lord, and one of Heaven's soldiers. He has acted in this capacity at least since Lucifer's fall.
During the events leading up to the biblical apocalypse, Castiel is tasked with raising The Righteous Man, Dean Winchester, from Hell. After completing this undertaking, he's given the order to assist Dean in his tasks from Heaven. Unbeknownst to Castiel, it is in truth Heaven's duty to set the apocalypse into motion. When he learns this, he initially continues to follow orders, but after becoming closer to Dean, Dean is able to convince him to rebel in order to save humanity.
After this, Castiel is cut off from Heaven, and although he occasionally allays himself with Heaven in the future, is considered a fallen angel from then on.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Castiel's vessel of choice is a white male in his mid-thirties, formerly belonging to one Jimmy Novak. His dark hair is presented in a short cut with the bangs combed up. His skin tone is light, but has a tendency to take on a noticeable tan. He has a round, chiseled, pleasant face, bearing a permanent five-o-clock shadow, heavy eyelids, and noticeable crows feet beneath his eyes, which gives him the perpetually tired look of a harried white collar worker.
He's slim (cw: blood, cuts), being neither particularly skinny nor overtly muscular. Over the years, he does fill out to an extent, though he doesn't have very extreme muscle definition. There's a softness to his belly and thighs that indicate his vessel's more sedentary lifestyle.
There is an angelic warding tattoo on the left side of his ribcage that makes him undetectable to other angels. He has no freckles, but he does have a few dark moles on his body, including one just above his right nipple. There is a very faint scar on his upper lip, but it's quite difficult to see.

Castiel is almost always seen wearing the same outfit: A charcoal grey suit, blue tie, white dress shirt, black leather belt, black shoes*, and a tan trench coat/overcoat. He never fastens the suit or coat, and wears the tie loose. His clothes are rumpled, and give the impression of being slightly too large for him.
* Castiel normally wears ankle boots, but he does originally wear dress shoes in his introductory season. Likely the reason for the change was for the comfort of the actor... so I choose to pretend he's still wearing dress shoes. Because it's cute.
When mortal, he tends to opt for comfort over fashion, donning plain shirts, sweaters, hoodies, jeans, and trainers.

His breath is odorless and all of his hormonal bodily functions are turned off, but his skin and hair give off a faint scent of themselves. There's no scent of any sort of soaps. He tends to take on the scent of where he's been last because of his own lack of scent.
Wings - As an angelic being, Castiel also has wings. They aren't usually visible. After the events of Season 8, his wings are damaged, and most of the flight feathers are lost (they would look something like this). His wingspan is a little over 20ft, and his wing shape resembles that of a raptor or large soaring bird. The color of his wings is never revealed, as we only ever see their shadows, but they are popularly depicted as white or black. Most times I choose to depict them as black and highly iridescent, with a grey gradient on the inner wing.
